O5 CHAIR
Chair | 2016
The O5 Chair is made of steam- bent FSC beech timber. This old crafts technique of bending wood in steam is particularly eco-friendly. Additionally, the frame receives an eco-friendly finish.
The chair is produced by skilled woodworkers helped by the smartest machines. Since craftsmanship takes time and time is expensive, Darlie would like to reintroduce some of the old thoughts on how to join wood.
As it is no longer economical today to bend wood, for the manufacture of our chairs we had to resort to the more modern but generic moulded plywood process. But instead of fighting progress, he uses the new CNC milling possibilities of creating complex wood bending to shine a light on the old ways.
A very simple chair, almost like that archetype of a chair. A homage to traditional joinery knowledge that has become obsolete when handmade joinery is out of fashion and too expensive. He wanted to create a new interest in the old ways of joinery by colliding the traditional manufacturing techniques with state of the art technology.
The O5 Chair will be an ecumenical, epistemological and cross-cultural convergence where philosophy, science, religion and art can be explored, expanded and experienced.
The O5 Chair consists of five interlaced rings of equal dimensions, which will evoke awe, joy, wonder and optimism. Besides its symbolic identity, the design is visually harmonious.
